Have just been looking at the information sent to me from The Beer Quarry Caves.

These caves are only a couple of miles from Flintstones Cottage in Seaton and are well worth a visit.

They were established by the Romans over 2000 years ago and the stone quarried from these caves has been used in many public buildings including Exeter Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

More recently the caves have become known as a conservation habitat for the rare Horseshoe Bats that use the caves as their winter hibernation roost.

The BBC programme “Countryfile” featured the caves and the bats in a special programme focused on East Devon last year, and revealed that the bats fly from the caves to a summer roost which has been specially built for them on the Axe Wetlands Bird Sanctuary, which is just 5 minutes walk from Flintstones cottage.

The cave are open from the Monday before Easter until the end of October, and out of season tours can be arranged too.
